Just 16 miles west of central Phoenix you will find a little oasis in the desert called Litchfield Park. This beautiful town was recently recognized by Phoenix Magazine as “one of the 8 best places to live in Arizona”. Litchfield Park’s approximately 5,000 residents enjoy beautiful parks, a lake, walking and biking paths, golf courses, a library, arts and crafts festivals, outdoor concerts, special events and more. In heart of “Old Litchfield” are several restaurants and business. Litchfield Park is also home to the 4-star resort, The Wigwam Resort and Spa. The Wigwam has 3 beautiful golf courses, 2 pools, tennis courts, The Red Door Spa and 4 restaurants that residents and visitors can enjoy.
Some interesting facts about Litchfield Park:
- Litchfield Park began in 1916 by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company
- The new community became headquarters for Goodyear Farms
- Goodyear Farms had thousands of acres in the area.
- The town was officially named after Paul Litchfield in 1926
- Paul Litchfield was in charge of the Arizona project
- Litchfield Park was incorporated in 1987
- The first teacher in the Litchfield district was Mabel Padgett, who started the school in 1917 in a former cook shack with 11 pupils
- In 1918 school bonds were approved for a permanent public school in the Litchfield area
- The streets of Litchfield are lined with palm trees and orange trees which was Paul Litchfield’s idea
- On Thanksgiving day, 1929, the Wigwam Resort opened to the public with the capacity to hold 24 guests
- Litchfield Elementary was originally a K-thru High School facility, later it became K thru 8th, and currently it is K-5th
- Generations of families have lived or are living in Litchfield Park and the surrounding areas
